City of York Fire Station. This has been my latest project and shows in 1.76 scale my scratch built model of the York City Fire Station dating from around 1970/74 while the station still had its lovely teak doors which were replaced in 1980.I've for sometime wanted to do a brigade that at one time operated appliances that were in the yellow livery and having recently modeled some of the appliances, decided next to make the station.
History:-The original building was built as the Peckitt Street Trinity Chapel for the Methodist New Connexion and was opened on the 27th June 1856.In 1935 the chapel was closed and the premises were purchased by the York Corporation for conversion to a fire station. In 1936 a tender for £3,366 was accepted and work commenced on re-developing the building into a six bay fire station for the city.A seperate tender for £3,062 was accepted in 1937 for the conversion of the first floor of the new station into married quarters. The new fire station was officially opened on the 27th April,1938.
The model was totally scratch built from plasticard, and was built in 2 parts due to its size, actually the back section I've added also a front so can be displayed as a 3 bay 1950's style fire station also.
I'd like to thank my friend Paul Warnock(York)for photographs and his assistence to enable me to make this model of the City of York Fire Station which I understand is to close in the near future, but for now its still operational.
