1950's Style Fire Station and Appliances.

This picture shows the latest model fire station I've just completed from the 1950's era to house the 1/76 scale London fire appliances from the same period I've just converted.
The appliances are from the Corgi,Oxford Diecast, and the Base Toys range of vehicles and show from left to right a converted Bristol H/C Control Unit, converted Dennis F12 Emergency Tender,Leyland Turntable Ladder,a Pump and Pump Escape, and last a converted Dodge Foam Tender.
Now, do I or don't I make a tower for the drill yard?.Yes,maybe I should.

Pete, you could also do with a few firemen or should i say firefighters.

Bob,I agree but where does one get 1950's/60's british firemen from in the 1/76 or'HO'scale. I see Langley Miniature Models do a set, but they look far to modern for this type of scene and type of appliances.
This coming week I'll be repairing/touching up some of my old models made over the last few years ready for this years events,I'll take a few pictures as I'm restoring them and send into the site. Comments always welcome.Pete.

Hi Pete. Great models and station I agree you need to build a tower. Look forward to seeing the other model ststions.

Pete,i have some Langley figures, they do not look too out of place, also,MMS models do a wartime NFS set,you could swap heads so you have cork helmets and lancer tunics.

Thanks Bob,I'll check out those Langley figures again and might order a couple of sets.Don't know who MMS Models are but would certainly be very interested in seeing those NFS figures. Is there an address,or site where I can view the models?.

Hello Pete, these look terrific lined up in the diorama. I know I asked you about the BW beacons before, but where did you obtain the two-tone horns and the larger beacons for the CU? They look fantastic. Thanks

Paul, for some reason BW don't seem to have two-tone horns in their Civilian Emergency Sets?,also something else I wanted was searchlights, but again I cannot find them in the catalogue,so again I don't for some reason think they do them either.
The two-tone's I used were from FBM(Fire Brigade Models)by Paul Slade. They are though not really made for this 1/76th scale model, but for the larger 1/43-1/50th scale model.
Reference the round large beacon on the Control Unit. This was actually scratch-built using a nail with a large round top,and a washer. The tip of the nail was cut right back just leaving a fine tip, this tip was then stuck through the washer and glued,it was then painted, tranfer applied and then stuck on vehicle before roof was painted.
Start looking through your old nail tin in the shed mate, its truly amazing what you can find in the rubbish we seem to keep, that just might come in handy one day-maybe even something to make a control unit beacon.

Paul, sorry I think I may have misunderstood your question. The beacons(blue lights)on the CU come from an old American Lafrance pumper in 1/64 scale by a company called PlayArt(made in Hong Kong)which I removed some years ago because I wanted to convert the model into an 1982 ALF Satellite Unit used by the City of New York Fire Department and the lights on the model were wrong.I kept the removed lights from that PlayArt model and after filling them down and slighty reshaping them used them on the LFB Control Unit.

Pete,i think you will find that BW models will probably supply any parts that he makes, even if they are not in the catalogue as seperate items.

Added by Bristol Bob on 19 April 2010.
Thanks very much for that tip Bob,I'll get intouch with BW Models and make enquiries to see what is actually available.Thanks.

I contacted BW Models on 22/4/10 and had a reply today (23/4/10) from Barry Wright (BW Models) about two-tone horns and searchlights. These items although not showing in the present catalogue are available, they cannot display everything they do but due to my request, these items may well now appear in the next catalogue according to Barry.
If anybody wants to add these items to there next order they are:-set of 5 two-tone horns at £1.00 a set. Also, set of 5 searchlights at £1.00 a set.I don't think they have a catalogue number as such because these items are from the model kits they do,but they are available as seperate items.

A belated thank you to you Pete (and Bristol Bob) for the information. I shall add this to my order and hopefully will then be able to 'post' my finished attempts. I came across this website quite by accident but the content - as well as the knowledge of contributors - is first class. Serendipity perhaps?
